Franklyn Stephenson

බටහිර ඉන්දීය කොදෙව් දුපත් වලට ක්‍රීඩා නොකළ විශිෂ්ටතම ක්‍රීඩකයා ලෙස ස්ටෙෆන්සන් හැදින්විය හැක. තුන් ඉරියව් ක්‍රීඩකයන් බහුලව සිටි 80 දශකයේ ස්ටෙෆන්සන් ක්‍රීඩා කළේය. ඉතාමත් උස දකුණත් වේග පන්දු යවන්නෙකු වූ ස්ටෙෆන්සන් වේගය ඉලිප්පීම හා දෝලනය මිශ්‍ර කරගත්  දරුණුතම වේග පන්දු යවනෙකි. ස්ටෙෆන්සන් පන්දුව යැවීමට දිව ආවේ උදාසීන ලෙසටය. මෙය දැකීමෙන්  පිතිකරුවන් ඔහුව ලේසියට ගන්න හැදුවද පන්දුව අතින් ගිලිහුන පසු පිතිකරු දෙසට එන්නේ පිතිකරු පුදුමයට පත්කරවමින්ය. ස්ටෙෆන්සන් විශිෂ්ට ලෙස loopy slower ball හැසිරුවෙකි. Beamer පන්දුවක් ලෙස ගිලිහුන ද එය ගුවනේදී පහත් වී කඩුල්ලේ යට කොටසේ වදී. (මාලිංග මෙම පන්දුව උපයෝගී කරගන්නෙකි)

මහද්වීප 4ක කණ්ඩායම් 7ක ට පළමු පෙළ තරග ක්‍රීඩා කර ඇති ස්ටෙෆන්සන් තරග 219 කදී දවාගෙන ඇති කඩුලු සංක්‍යාව 792කි. එහි සාමාන්‍ය 24.26 ක් වේ. මෙයට five wicket hauls 44ක් සහ ten wicket hauls 10ක් ද ඇතුලත් වේ. පිතුකරුවෙක් ලෙසටද දක්ෂතා දැක්වූ ස්ටෙෆන්සන් ශතක 12ක් සමග ලකුණු 8622ක් රැස් කර ඇත්තේ සාමාන්‍ය 28ක් රදවගමින්ය. ඔහුගේ ප්‍රථම ශතකය (165) රැස් කළේ Nightwatchman ලෙස පැමිණය.

මෙවන් දක්ෂතා වලින් පරිපුන් ක්‍රීඩකයෙක් කොදෙව් දුපත් වලට කිසිදු ටෙස්ට් තරගයක් ක්‍රීඩා නොකළේ මන්ද යැයි ඔබ හිතනවා ඇති. එය සිදුවුයේ 1982 දි  දකුණු අප්‍රිකානු තහනම් සංචාර වලට සහභාගී  විම නිසා අත් වූ තරග තහනම හේතුවෙනි. දකුණු අප්‍රිකා තහනම් සංචාර එහි වාර්ගික අර්බුධ නිසා අත් වූ තරග තහනම හේතුවෙන්  1982-1990 කාලසීමාවේදී  ටෙස්ට් තරග 7කින් සමන්විත වූ තරගාවලියකි. ස්ටෙෆන්සන් මෙහිදී  World XI කණ්ඩායමට 1985 දීත් සහ තවත් තරග 3ක් ක්‍රීඩා කළේය. මෙය සිදුනොවුයේ නම් නාස්ති වූ ක්‍රීඩකයෙක් වෙනුවට අද අපිට විශිෂ්ට ක්‍රීඩකයකු ගැන කතා කිරීමට ඉඩ තිබුණි.

Franklyn Stephenson

Stephenson is known as the greatest cricketer never to play cricket for West Indies. He played in 80s where all rounders ruled the world cricket. A tall Right-arm fast bowler who is fearsome as any in that era had pace, bounce and swing to intimidate batsmen.  His lazy run up arose complacency in batsmen, could only relax until the unexpected menacing delivery was delivered. He was a master of the "loopy slower ball" where batsmen ducked for cover and ball hit the base of stumps (A delivery that Malinga uses occasionally)

Stephenson played first class cricket for 7 teams over 4 continents. He has played 219 first class matches picking up 792 wickets averaging 24.26 for each with 44 five-fors and 10 ten-fors. Stephenson was a handy lower order batsman  scoring 8622 with 12 centuries at 28. His maiden century came when he batted as a night watchman which ended at 165.

Now everybody must be wondering why a guy like Stephenson who got so much talent didn't play a single test. Well it's due to his participation in the rebel tour to South Africa in 1982. Rebel tours were a series of seven test matches played between 1982 and 1990 when South Africa was banned from international cricket due to racial issues. Stephenson played for a World XI in 1985 and another 3 Rebel Tests against South Africa. Had this not happened, instead of a wasted talent there would have been an all time great for us to talk about right now.

Phil Jaques

ෆිල් ජැක්ස් යනු ඔස්ට්‍රලියාවෙන් බිහිවුණු බොහෝ අවාසනාවන්තයින් අතරට එක් වෙන තවත් ක්‍රීඩකයෙකි. ඔහුගේ පළමුපෙළ වාර්තාව ඉතා විශිෂ්ට වේ. ලකුණු 16035 තරග 200 කට අදික සන්ක්‍යවකදී සාමාන්‍ය 48.29 ක් ශතක 44ක් ද අතුලත් වේ.

ජැක්ස් ඔහුගේ ප්‍රථම ටෙස්ට් තරගය ක්‍රීඩා කළේ දකුණු අප්‍රිකානු කණ්ඩායමට එරෙහිව 2005 දිය. ජස්ටින් ලැන්ගර් වෙනුවට ආරම්භක පිතිකරු ලෙස ක්‍රීඩා කරමින් 2007 දි ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට එරෙහිව තරග 2කදි පිට පිට ශතක 2ක් වාර්තා කිරීමට සමත් වෙනවා. 2008දී පැවති අවසාන බටහිර ඉන්දීය කොදෙව් තරගයේදී ශතකයක් රැස් කරගන්නා ජැක්ස්ට අවාසනාවන්ත ලෙස කණ්ඩායමෙන් ඉවත් වන්නට සිදුවන්නේ මැතිව් හේඩන් ගේ නැවත පැමිණීමත් සමගය. ජැක්ස් හට ඉතාමත් බරපතල පිටකොන්දේ ආබාධයක් හේතුවෙන් 2009 දි ඔස්ට්‍රලියානු ගිවිසුම අහිමිවනවා. පිලිප් හියුස් ගේ ආගමනයත් සමග ජැක්ස් ට ඔස්ට්‍රලියානු කණ්ඩායමේ ස්ථානය අහිමි වනවා.

ජැක්ස් ඔහුගේ කෙටි ටෙස්ට් ජීවිතය තුළ ලකුණු 902ක් රැස් කරගෙන ඇත්තේ ශතක  3ක් සමගින් සාමාන්‍ය 47.47ක් වැනි ඉහල අගයක රදවා ගනිමින්ය. ඔහුගේ වැඩිම ලකුණු අගය වන 150 වාර්තා කළේ කුමාර්  සංගක්කාර 192  ලබාගත් තරගයේ දීමය. අවාසනාවන්ත ලෙස වෙනත් කිසිදු ලකුණක් ඔහුගේ එකතුවට දා ගැනීමට නොහැකි විය. වරෙක ස්ටීව් වෝ පවසා සිටියේ ජැක්ස්ට මීලග ඇඩ්ම ගිල්ක්‍රිස්ට් වීමේ හැකියාව ඇති බවයි. නමුත් 2012 දී ඕස්ට්‍රේලියානු පළමු පෙළ පිටියට සමුදුන් ඔහු එංගලන්ත ප්‍රාන්ත ක්‍රීඩා කිරීමට යන්න ගියේය.

Phil Jaques

Phil Jaques was one of the many unlucky players of Australian Cricket. He holds an impressive first class record scoring 16035 runs over 200 matches at an average of 48.29 with 44 centuries.

Jaques who made his test debut against South Africa in 2005 scored back to back centuries in 2 matches against Sri Lanka in 2007 where he came as a replacement for Justin Langer. He scored a century in the last test against West Indies in 2008 and was dropped from the side when Matthew Heyden returned to the side. He suffered a severe back problem which led to many surgeries and as a reason he lost his contract in 2009. With Phillip Hughes making his mark in that era Phillip Jaques couldn't break into the team.

In his short career as a test player he has scored 902 runs at 47.47 with 3 centuries. His highest score of 150 came in the same match where Sangakkara scored that memorable 192. Unfortunately couldn't add more to his tally. Jaques who was backed by Steve Waugh to become next Adam Gilchrist retired from Australian first class cricket in 2012 to play in English County Championship.

Martin Love

වැරදි රටක වැරදි යුගයක ඉපදුනු තවත් එක් අවාසනාවන්තයෙක් වන මාර්ටින් ලව් ගේ පළමු පෙළ වාර්තාව - ලකුණු 16952 සාමාන්‍ය 49.85 ශතක 45. ඔහු නම් දරා සිටියේ අවසන් මහා තරගවල විශේෂයෙන්  දක්ෂතා පෙන්වන ක්‍රීඩකයෙක් ලෙසයි. ශේෆිල්ඩ් ශිල්ඩ් තරගාවලියේ අවසන් තරගයේ කුයින්ස්ලන්ඩ් කණ්ඩායම වෙනුවෙන් ශතකයක් රැස් කර කුවින්ස්ලන්ඩ් වෙත ඔව්න්ගේ කුලුදුල් කුසලානය ලබා දුන්නේය. මින් season 5ක ට පසුව පුරා කප් අවසන් තරගයේ ද ශතකයක් රැස් කර එහි ජයග්‍රහණයද කුවින්ස්ලන්ඩ් පිලට හිමිකර දුන්නේය.

2002 දී ලව් හට ටෙස්ට් වරම් හිමි උනි. ඒ එංගලන්තය සමග Boxing Day ටෙස්ට් තරගයේදීය. ඔහු එම තරගයේදී ලකුණු 62ක් නොදැවී ලබාගත්තේය. ටෙස්ට් තරග 5ක ට ක්‍රීඩා කර ඇති ලව් ලකුණු 233ක් සාමාන්‍ය 46.60 කදී ලබාගෙන ඇත. 2003 දී ලව් කණ්ඩායමෙන් ඉවත් කෙරුනේ ඩේමියන් මාර්ටින් කණ්ඩායමට ආවිටය. කෙතරම් අවාසනාවන්තද කියතොත් බංගලාදේශය සමග තම ප්‍රථම ශතකය රැස් කිරීමෙන් පසුව කිසිම තරගයක් ක්‍රීඩා කිරීමට ලව් ට නොහැකි විය.

අන්තර්ජාතික පිටියේ ඉඩක් නොලැබුවද දේශීය තරග බිමේ තම කුවින්ස්ලන්ඩ් පිලට ලකුණු රැස් කල ලව් එහිදී කුවින්ස්ලන්ඩ් කණ්ඩායමේ ඉහලම ලකුණු ලාබියා විය. ඔහු බිද දැමුවේ Stuart Law ගේ වාර්තාවයි. අවසන් අවදියේදී විවිධ ආබාධයන්ට ලක්වූ ලව් 2009 දි 219*ක් ගැබා පිටියේද, මෙල්බර්න් හිදී තම අවසාන ඉනිමේදි   104*  ලබාගෙන ක්‍රිකට් ක්‍රීඩාවෙන් සමුගත්තේය.

Martin Love

Another victim of wrong country wrong era, Martin Love's first class record reads 16952 runs at 49.85 with 45 centuries. He was known as a man for the big occasions scored 146 in Sheffield Shield final when Queensland finally won their first Sheffield Shield and another 100 five seasons later to draw the match and win Pura Cup.

Love was finally awarded the test cap in 2002 against England in the Boxing Day test and scored 62*. Love who has played 5 tests for Australia scored 233 runs at 46.60. Love was dropped from the team after his maiden century against Bangladesh in 2003 when Damien Martyn returned from injury. Yes dropped after a century.

Love continued to score runs for Queensland and surpassed Stuart Law as the highest run scorer for Queensland. Unfortunately his body took tall on his career facing many injuries in his latter ages. Martin Love finished his career on a high in 2009 scoring 219* at Gabba and 104* in his final inning at Melbourne.

සෝමචන්ද්‍ර දි සිල්වා

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ පා දඟ පන්දු යවන්නන් අතර ප්‍රමුක ස්ථානයක් හිමි දි එස් දි සිල්වා ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට ටෙස්ට් වරම් හිමිවන විට පසුවූයේ ක්‍රීඩකයන් විශ්‍රාම යන සමයේය. ඔහු ක්‍රීඩා කල කෙටි කාලය තුල තරග 12 කට ක්‍රීඩා කර කඩුලු 37ක් දවාගෙන ඇත. ඔහුගේ කඩුල්ලක සාමාන්‍ය 36.40 ක් විය.

ශ්‍රී ලංකා කණ්ඩායම ක්‍රීඩා කල ප්‍රථම ටෙස්ට් තරගයේ දි ඩි එස් දි සිල්වා ඩේවිඩ් ගාවර් ගේ විකට්ටුව සමග කඩුලු 3ක් බිද හෙලුවා. මින් පසුව පැවති පකිස්තානු සංචාරයේදී දක්ෂතා අතරට පැමිණෙමින් ඔහු බිදහෙලු ටෙස්ට් කඩුලු සංක්‍යාව 17කි. මෙය මෙම තරග 3නෙදී ක්‍රීඩකයකු බිදහෙලු වැඩිම කඩුලු සන්ක්යාවයි. ඔහු දෙවෙනි ෆයිසලාබඩ් තරගයේ දි විකට් 5ක් දවා ගන්නා අතර මෙය වාර්තා පොත් වලට යන්නේ ශ්‍රී ලාංකික ක්‍රීඩකයකු දවාගත් ප්‍රථම විකට් 5හෙ එකතුව ලෙසයි. දුලිප් මෙන්ඩිස් ගේ අඩුව පුරවමින් මින් පසුව පැවති නවසිලන්ත තරගාවලියට නායකත්වය දෙමින් එම තරගාවලියේම අනෙක් පිතිකරුවන් අසාර්ථක වෙද්දී යට පෙලෙන් පැමිණ අගනා අර්ධ ශතක 2ක් රැස් කළා.

වේල්ස් කුමර විද්‍යාලයේ ආදී ශිෂ්‍යයෙක් වන දි එස් දි සිල්වා 1966 – 1995 ත් අතර ක්‍රීඩා කල ඇති පළමු පෙළ තරග සංක්‍යාව 66කි. එහිදී ඔහු කඩුලු 241ක් බිද දමා ඇත්තේ සාමාන්‍ය 28.40ක් රදවා ගමින්ය. විකට් 5ක් ලබා ගත් අවස්ථා 15ක් ද විකට් 10ක් ලබාගත් අවස්ථා 5ක් ද එයට ඇතුලත් වේ. ඔහුගේ පළමු පෙළ වාර්තාව ඉතාමත් අනර්ග වන්නේ කඩුලු 50ක් හා 150ක් ලබාගැනීමට ඔහු ගත්තේ තරග 15ක් හා 29ක් පමණි. දි සිල්වා එංගලන්ත ප්‍රාන්ත කණ්ඩායම් වන මිඩ්ල්ටන්, ලින්ක්ල්න්ශයර් කණ්ඩායම් නියෝජනය කර ඇත.

පා දග පන්දු යවන්නන් අල්පයක් පමණක් ලොවට දායාද කල ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට ඩි එස් දි සිල්වා නැති වීම ඉමහත් පාඩුවකි. ඔහු තව දශකයක් පමා වී ඉපදුනේනම් එය මගහරවා ගන්නට තිබිණ.

Somachandra De Silva

One of Sri Lanka's finest leg spinners DS de Silva was really unlucky since he was aged when Sri Lanka received test status. He has 37 wickets in 12 test matches at 36.40. 

De Silva who played in Sri Lanka's inaugural Test against England in 1982 picked up 3 wickets first of them being David Gower. He made a name for himself when he picked up 17 wickets in the tour that followed against Pakistan. He finished as the highest wicket taker of the series. He took a five-wicket haul in Faisalabad which was the first five wicket haul by a Sri Lankan. De Silva also has captained Sri Lanka in 2 tests in New Zealand in the absence of Dulip Mendis. He was handy with the bat scoring 2 fifties in the same tour as captain.

An old boy of Prince of Wales, Moratuwa, De Silva who has played 66 first class matches in between 1966-1995 has picked up 241 wickets at 28.40 with 15 five fors and 5 ten fors. His first class records were impressive as he rushed to 50 wickets in 15 matches and 150 wickets in 29 matches. De Silva also played for Middleton, Lincolnshire, in Central Lancershire League.

Sri Lanka as a country not known for producing quality leg spinners, Somachandra De Silva would have been the ideal solution had he born a decade later.

Sylvester Clarke

මොහු ඉතාමත් උස බටහිර ඉන්දීය කොදෙව් කණ්ඩායමට ක්‍රීඩාකර පු වේග පන්දු යවන්නෙකි. ලෝක ප්‍රචලිත පන්දු යවන බල ඇණියක් වූ රොබට්ස්, හෝල්ඩින්ග්, ගාර්නර්, ක්රෝෆ්ට්, මාෂල් වැන්නන් ගේ සමකාලිනයෙකි. එම පන්දු යවන්නන් අතරින් භයානකම පන්දු යවන්නා වුයේ සිල්වෙස්ටර් ක්ලාර්ක් ය. පිතිකරුවන් බිරාන්ත කරන ලෝකයේ බිහිවූ පන්දු යවන්නන් ගෙන් කෙනකි. ඩේවිඩ් ගවර්, වෝ වැන්නවුන් මොහුව හදුන්වා තිබෙන්නේ ඔවුන් මුහුණ දුන් වේගවත්ම පන්දු යවන්නා ලෙසයි. සර් විවියන් රිචාර්ඩ්ස් පවසා සිටියේ ඔහුව අපහසුතාවයට පත් කල එකම පන්දු යවන්නා සිල්වෙස්ටර් ක්ලාර්ක් බවයි.

ක්ලාර්ක් ඔහුගේ වේගය උපයොගී කරමින් කෙටි පන්දු යැවීමට කවදාවත් පසුබට වුයේ නැත. දිනක් විනිසුරු ක්ලාර්ක්ට අවවාද කළේ ඕනවට වැඩිය කෙටි පන්දු යැවීම හේතුවෙනි. විනිසුරු දෙසට හැරුණු ක්ලාර්ක් පවසා සිටියේ මෙහි කාන්තාවන් ක්‍රීඩා නොකරන බවයි. ඔහුගේ කෙටි පන්දු කෙතරම් භයානකද කිවහොත් එය පිතිකරුගේ විකට්ටුවට පමණක් නෙව ඔහුගේ ජිවිතයට පවා තර්ජනයක් විය. ක්ලාර්ක්ට ඔහුටම ආවේනික වූ පන්දුවක් තිබිණ. පිට ඉන්නට ඈතින් පතිතවෙන බවුන්සර් පන්දුව පිතිකරුගේ හිස දෙසට සීම් කිරීමය.

නමුත් ඔහු ක්‍රීඩා කළේ ටෙස්ට් තරග 11ක් පමණි. එයට හේතු ලෙස අබාධ සහ අනෙක් ක්‍රීඩකයන් ගෙන් තිබු තරගය හැදින්විය හැකිය. ඔහු දකුණු අප්‍රිකානු තහනම් සංචාර වලට සහභාගී වී ක්‍රිකට් ක්‍රීඩාවෙන් නෙරපා දැමිය. ටෙස්ට් තරග 11 දි කඩුලු 42ක් සාමාන්‍ය 27.85 ක් ලබා ගැනීමට ක්ලාර්ක් සමත් විය. එය දකුණු ආසියානු මන්දගාමී තණතීරු වල විම විශේෂයි. එක්දින කඩුලු 13ක් තරග 10කදි දවාගෙන ඇත්තේ සාමාන්‍ය 18.84 ක් රදවා ගනිමින්ය. පළමුපෙළ තරග වලදී කඩුලු 942ක් සාමාන්‍ය 19.52 කඩුලු 5ක් දවාගත් අවස්ථා 59ක් හා 10ක් දවාගත් අවස්ථා 10ක් ඇත. ක්ලාර්ක් 1999 වසරේ හර්දයාබාදයක් හේතුවෙන් මිය යන විට 44 වන වියේ පසුවිය.

Sylvester Clarke

A tall West Indies fast bowler who played in the same era as Roberts, Holding, Garner, Croft and Marshall was the most menacing of all these bowlers. One of the most intimidating bowlers the game has ever seen. Clarke was described by the likes of David Gower and Waugh as the fastest bowler they have ever faced and admitted by Great Sir Vivian Richards as the only bowler whom he felt uncomfortable against.

Clarke who had sheer pace was never shy of bowling bouncers. He was once warned by the umpire for bowling excessive bouncers and he turned and replied “This no ladies game man”. His bouncers were lethal which threatened not only batsmen’s wickets but also their lives. Clarke was known for bowling a unique delivery, a bouncer which pitched way outside off and came back to hit batsman on the face.

Yet he played only 11 tests mostly due to competition from his team mates and few injuries over the years. He participated in the rebel tours to South Africa and got banned from international cricket. He has picked up 42 wickets at 27.85 9 of which he played in subcontinent and 13 wickets in 10 ODIs played at 18.84. In first class cricket he has 942 wickets at 19.52 with 59 five wicket hauls and 10 ten wicket hauls. Clarke passed away at the age of 44 due to a heart-attack in 1999.

Group created by Amila Kalhara Wagasinghe on 26th October 2010. We didn't have personal goals in early stages of the Group but day by day this became one of the most successful cricket group in Facebook.
