මෑත කාලයේ සිටින තවත් අවාසනාවන්ත ක්‍රීඩකයෙක් වන Callum Ferguson ඕස්ට්‍රේලියාවෙන් බිහිවූ තවත් දක්ෂ ක්‍රීඩකයෙක් වන අතර සිය පළමු පෙළ තරඟ දිවිය ආරම්භ කරන්නේ තම මුල් තරඟ වාර දෙකේදීම දකුණු ඕස්ට්‍රේලියානු කණ්ඩායම වෙනුවෙන් ලකුණු 733ක් සහ 503ක් ලබාගනිමිනි.

Ferguson සිය එක්දින ජ්‍යාත්‍යන්තර දිවිය ආරම්භ කරන්නේ 2009දී ය. මේ වනවිට එක්දින තරඟ 30කට ක්‍රීඩා කර ඇති Ferguson එහිදී ලකුණු  663ක් ලබාගෙන ඇති අතර සාමාන්‍ය 41.43ක් ලෙස සටහන් වේ.  අන්තර්ජාතික ක්‍රිකට් පිටියේ පහල පෙළ පිතිකරුවන් අතරින්  සාමාන්‍ය 40ට ඉහල සහ strike rate 85ට ඉහල රඳවාගෙන ඇති පිතිකරුවන්  අතලොස්ස අතරින් එක් පිතිකරුවෙක් ලෙස Ferguson නම් කල හැක.

Fergusonගේ පළමු පෙළ තරඟ වාර්තා ද හොද මට්ටමක පවතී. ඔහු ලකුණු  5633ක් සහ සාමාන්‍ය 38.58ක් සමගින් ශතක 11කට ද හිමිකම් කියයි. අවාසනාවකට මෙන් ඔහුගේ 2009 Champions Trophy අවසන් මහා තරඟයේදී සිදුවූ දණහිස් අබාධය නිසා ඔහුට 2009-10 සම්පුර්ණ තරඟ වාරයම අහිමි විය. එම අබාධයට පෙර ඔහු එම වර්ෂයේදී අර්ධ ශතක 5ක් රැස්කරගෙන සිටියේ ය. ඉන් පසු ඔහුට කණ්ඩායමට ඇතුල් වීමට අපහසු වුයේ දැඩි තරඟකාරීත්වය  නිසාය.

Ferguson's ගේ හැකියාවන් සුළුකොට තැකිය නොහැක. වේග පන්දු යවන්නන් හමුවේ දක්ෂ ලෙස ලකුණු රැස්කිරීමේ හැකියාව ඔහු සතුව ඇත.තවමත් 30වැනි වියේ පසුවන Ferguson's හට තවමත් ඕස්ට්‍රේලියානු කණ්ඩායමට එක්වීමේ හැකියාව පවතී. ඔහුගේ පළමු පෙළ තරඟ වලදී මේ වනවිට හොඳ රිද්මයක් පවත්වාගෙන යන නිසා ඔහුට නුදුරේදී අවස්ථාවක් ලැබීමට ඉඩකඩ ඇත.

Callum Ferguson

One of the unlucky players of modern days, Callum Ferguson made an impressive entry to first class cricket in Australia scoring 733 and 503 runs in his first two first-class seasons with South Australia. He made his ODI debut in 2009 and has since then played 30 ODIs scoring 663 runs at an average of 41.43. Ferguson is one of the few players in the world who have a batting average of 40+ with a strike rate of 85+ batting lower down the order.

Ferguson also holds a decent first class record scoring 5633 runs at 38.58 with 11 centuries. Unfortunately his career hit back in 2009 after suffering a serious knee injury while fielding in the 2009 Champions Trophy final, ruling him out of the entire 2009-10 season. He had scored 5 half centuries that year before he was ruled out. He struggled to break in to the team since then.

Ferguson's strength was not belligerence. He is a wonderful touch player yet managed to score at a brisk pace. Ferguson who is now 30 still has a lot of cricket left in him is backed by the likes of Mike Hussey to make a good test player. With his recent good form in first class matches let’s hope he gets a chance really soon.
