සජිත් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවෙන් බිහිවූ අවාසනාවන්තම ක්‍රීඩකයා ලෙස හැඳින්විය හැක. ශ්‍රී ලංකාව වෙනුවෙන් පළමු පෙළ තරඟාවලි වලදී ලකුණු 10000 සිමාව පසුකල ක්‍රීඩකයන් තිදෙනා අතරින් එක් ක්‍රීඩකයෙක් වන සජිත් සාමාන්‍ය 38.62ක් ලෙස පවත්වා ගනිමින් ලකුණු 10700 ක් රැස්කරගෙන ඇත. එයට ශතක 16ක් සහ අර්ධ ශතක 53ක්  ඇතුලත් ය. සාමාන්‍ය 23.78ක් සමගින් කඩුලු 269ක්ද ඔහුගේ වාර්තා අතර සඳහන් වේ. මෙවැනි අතිදක්ෂ ක්‍රීඩකයෙකු ශ්‍රී ලංකා කණ්ඩායමට ක්‍රීඩා කිරීමට නොලැබීම කණගාටුවට කරුණකි.

කටුගස්තොට ශාන්ත අන්තෝනි විද්‍යාලයෙන් බිහිකළ තවත් එක අතිදක්ෂ ක්‍රීඩකයෙකු වන සජිත් පාසල් අවදියේදී ක්‍රීඩා කලේ ලොව විශිෂ්ටතම දඟ  පන්දු යවන්නා වන මුත්තයියා මුරලිදරන් සමගය. සජිත් වසරේ පාසල් ක්‍රීඩකයාට හිමි සම්මානය 1992දී දිනාගන්නා ලදී. ඒ ඔහු එම වසරේදී ලකුණු 1000ක් සමගින් කඩුලු 100ක් ලබාගැනීම නිසාය. ඉන් පසුව සජිත් ශ්‍රී ලංකා 19න්  පහල කණ්ඩායම, 21න් පහල කණ්ඩායම සහ ශ්‍රී ලංකා A කණ්ඩායම යන කණ්ඩායම් වල නායකත්වය දැරුවේය.

සජිත් තම පළමු පෙළ දිවිය 1993/94දී ආරම්භ කල අතර ඉතා ඉහල දස්කම් දැක්වුව ද ඔහුට ශ්‍රී ලංකා කණ්ඩායමට එක්වීමට අවස්ථාවක් හිමිවුයේ නැත. සජිත් දේශීය තරඟාවලි වලදී Colts සහ Tamil Union කණ්ඩායම් නියෝජනය කර ඇති අතර එංගලන්ත ප්‍රාන්ත තරඟ වලදී Middleton, Settle සහ  Werneth කණ්ඩායම් වෙනුවෙන් ක්‍රීඩා කර ඇත.

දශක 2ක් තිස්සේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා කණ්ඩායමට එක් වීමට උත්සාහ දැරිය. 90 දශකයේදී ක්‍රීඩා දිවිය ආරම්භ කලද1996 සහ 1999 ලෝක කුසලාන සංචිත සඳහා ඔහුට අවස්ථාවක් හිමිවුයේ නැත.ඒ එකල ශ්‍රී ලංකා කණ්ඩායමේ මුල් පෙළ පිතිකරුවන්ගේ සාර්ථකත්වය නිසා ය.තරුණ ක්‍රීඩකයන්ට දිගින් දිගටම අවස්ථාව හිමිවූ නිසා 1999 ලෝක කුසලානයෙන් පසුවද ඔහුට අවස්ථාවක් හිමිවුයේ නැත.පළමු පෙළ ලකුණු 10000 සිමාව පසුකර ශ්‍රී ලංකා කණ්ඩායමට ක්‍රීඩා නොකළ එකම ශ්‍රී ලාංකික ක්‍රීඩකයා ලෙස ඔහු වාර්තා අතරට එක්විය.

Sajith Fernando

Sajith is probably the unluckiest player Sri Lanka has had. He is one of the 3 Sri Lankan first class players who have scored more than 10000 first class runs. He has scored 10700 first class runs with 16 centuries and 53 half centuries at 38.62 and picked up 269 wickets at 23.78. It is very strange for a player who has that many runs and wickets not to have played for Sri Lanka.

Sajith who is a product of St. Anthony's College, Katugastota has played alongside with Great Muttiah Muralitharan in his school days. He became the schoolboy cricketer of the year in 1992 after scoring 1,000 runs capturing 100 wickets in a season. After that Sajith went on to captain Sri Lanka Under-19, Under-21 and Sri Lanka A. He started his first class career in 1993/94 and has been ignored from the national team despite performing very well.

Sajith has played for Sri Lankan clubs like Colts and Tamil Union and England county teams like Middleton, Settle and Werneth Cricket Clubs. Sajith kept trying to break into Sri Lankan National Team for over 2 decades. He emerged as a cricketer in 90s but couldn't make it to the World Cup squads in 1996 and 1999 due to settled top order.

After that Sri Lankan selector's youth policy kept him away from the team though he was in late 20s after 1999 world cup. His record of scoring over 10000 runs and not to have played a single game for Sri Lanka could remain unbreakable.
